This course is a comprehensive guide to understanding bilingualism and provides techniques and understanding of how to help a child who is learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). This course takes a look at the myths surrounding bilingualism, including brain development and cognitive ability, and breaks them down into fact or fiction. The course also provides helpful advice on how to make a space more easy to navigate and access for someone who is learning EAL, including classroom tips, help with conversational skills, and explains cultural differences which could go to explain certain habits or practices.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To develop your awareness and understanding of bilingual children
  • To be aware of, and subsequently raise, the profile of bilingual children and the curriculum
  • To develop strategies for supporting the bilingual child

This course meets the Children’s Home Quality Standards as outlined in The Children’s Homes Regulations (England) 2015 and Children’s Homes Quality Standards 2015.
