This course is a comprehensive guide to handling medication safely for the children and young people in your care. The course examines different medications and how they should be administered, along with the different medication labels and common side effects. Legal and ethical concerns are also covered, including understanding consent and keeping medication records.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To know how to comply with good practice to safely administer medication
  • To be aware of a range of medications, their form, and the route of administration
  • To be able to identify the six rights of medication
  • To review a label for an over-the-counter medication
  • To know how to safely administer and store medication
  • To be aware of the common side effects
  • To understand consent
  • To learn how to complete a medication administered record (MAR)

This course meets the Children’s Home Quality Standards as outlined in The Children’s Homes Regulations (England) 2015 and Children’s Homes Quality Standards 2015.
