This course explores the different mental health problems that are commonly found in children and young people. It describes the signs and symptoms of different mental health problems and explains why such problems develop. There is also a focus on improving understanding of self-harm in young people.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

• To understand the common mental health problems experienced by children and young people, specifically depression and anxiety disorders
• To know the signs and symptoms associated with common mental health problems in childhood
• To understand the cause of some common mental health problems seen in children and young people
• To understand self-harming behaviour as a symptom of mental health problems
• To be aware of the causes of self-harming behaviour

This course meets the Children’s Home Quality Standards as outlined in The Children’s Homes Regulations (England) 2015 and Children’s Homes Quality Standards 2015.
